UNIDO assists the Commission of the African Union and selected African countries in the production of essential pharmaceuticals according to national and international standards. The project includes the control of the application of such standards and of Intellectual Property rights in the pharmaceutical sector. It also includes the support of graduate courses in Tanzania, and an International workshop on finance and Business-to-Business opportunities for the producing companies from Africa in Bonn, Germany, held on 1-2 March 2018.

The projects seeks to contribute to the key objectives of the AfCFTA Protocol on Trade in Goods. 1. To support the implementation of AfCFTA Annexes on Non-Tariff Barriers, SPS measures and TBT, the project aims to increase the capacity of African policy makers with respect to the reduction of Non-tariff barriers, regulatory transparency and collaboration. It shall bridge the existing gap between capacities across African Regional Economic Communities. It puts in place required mechanisms and tools and supports the building of institutional infrastructure at the national level where needed. 2. To support economic diversification, regional value chain integration and upgrading of industrial capacity, the project aims to build capacity on intellectual property policies, licensing and technology transfer

The objective of the project is to create prospects for the local private sector in developing countries in the implementation of the TRIPS Agreement, in the areas of public health, access to medicines and local production, with a view to supporting them in the implementation of Sustainable Development Goal 3, and in particular target 3b. More specifically by methods of training and consultancy for national authorities, the project aims at promoting efficient domestic policy frameworks (including laws and regulations) that are conducive to the establishment of competitive economic activities with special regard to industrial and private sector development, and with due regard to the role of appropriate Intellectual Property policies.
