Ambassador Choi Hyuck (Korea)
O.i Arrangements for the review of Saudi Arabia
165. The Chairman said that, as he had informed the Council under agenda item M, Saudi Arabia had recently acceded to the WTO and was not applying any transitional period in the area of TRIPS. The Council had not yet received the required notifications of its legislation. He therefore suggested that the Council request the Secretariat to remind Saudi Arabia of its notification obligations. Given that after the receipt of the notifications, Members would need some time to prepare questions to be posed in the context of its review, and then Saudi Arabia would need some time to prepare its responses, it appeared that the most appropriate time for the review of TRIPS implementing legislation of Saudi Arabia would be the Council's first meeting in 2007. If the Council so agreed, he suggested that it revert to the arrangements for this review, in particular the deadline for questions and responses, at its next meeting.
