Ambassador Karen Tan (Singapore)
B.iii Arrangements for the review of national implementing legislation of Tonga
16. The Chairperson recalled that, at its meeting in June 2008, the Council had agreed that it would take up the review of the TRIPS implementing legislation of Tonga, a newly acceded Member, at its first meeting in 2009. Since then, the Council had agreed to postpone the review until its meeting scheduled for 27-28 October 2009 and set the target dates for the submission of questions and responses for that review at the present meeting. The Council had now received Tonga's notification of its TRIPS implementing laws and regulations, which was being circulated in document IP/N/1/TON/1 and related law series documents. In accordance with the standard procedures for reviews of legislation, she proposed that the Council set the following target dates for the submission of questions and answers in this review: - Questions should normally be submitted to Tonga, with a copy to the Secretariat, ten weeks before the meeting in which the review takes place; accordingly, she suggested setting the target date on 17 August. - Responses to questions posed within that deadline should normally be submitted four weeks before the meeting; accordingly, she suggested setting the target date on 28 September.
