303. The representative of Australia said that she was encouraged by the addition of IP enforcement on the agenda of this meeting. She welcomed the opportunity to discuss enforcement within the Council for TRIPS. Her delegation had sought in the past to have such a conversation, and would be very keen to engage actively in any future discussions. She was particularly interested in a discussion about Members' experiences, lessons learnt and best practices in relation to IP enforcement. Australia very much welcomed the release of the ACTA negotiating text in April. She regarded the release of the text prior to finalizing trade negotiations as setting a very high bar in transparency which provided an opportunity to openly discuss enforcement measures. She believed that ACTA could usefully complement existing international IP efforts. Standards in ACTA were largely built upon those negotiated within the WTO, and reflected the TRIPS consistent measures already in place in many WTO Member countries. Australia saw that many of the measures proposed in ACTA as useful to counter international trade in counterfeit and pirated material. She looked forward to a more elaborate discussion on enforcement issues in the WTO.
