The representatives of Switzerland, Australia, New Zealand and the European Community shared the concerns expressed by the United States in respect of the importance of strictly abiding by commitments in accession protocols. The representative of Switzerland said that paragraph 78 of the report of the Working Party on the Accession of Ecuador, in French, provided that Ecuador would apply the provisions of the TRIPS Agreement on 31 July 1996 at the latest. The representative of Australia said that specific derogations from transitional periods in accession protocols took precedence over the provisions in question of the WTO Agreement and of its annexes, such as Article 65 of the TRIPS Agreement.
