66. The representative of Peru said that the inscription in the register should play an important role in "facilitating" the protection of geographical indications for wines and spirits. For that purpose, the register could not be a simple notification or databank system which would not contribute to ensuring the respect of TRIPS obligations. A register of that nature would not be a proper multilateral system nor would it be appropriate to the commitment to reinforce the protection of geographical indications. The term "facilitate" should be understood as making available the means of identifying which geographical indications Members had to protect.
