The representative of the European Communities, in reply to the question posed by the delegation of the United States, said that the effects of registration under the WTO system were only those that WTO Members agreed upon, i.e., only those that were directly connected to the WTO registration. Referring to a comment made by the US delegation that the effects of registration under its proposal would be those decided at the national level, he asked whether that proposal would imply that a geographical indication registered by the EC would become a certification trademark in the United States.
