135. The representative of the United States, replying to the EC's question, said, that under the joint proposal, Members would have to apply, through domestic law, for legal protection of a geographical indication. If it was found that a given geographical indication notified by the EC met the standards of American law, then the EC could obtain protection for their geographical indication under the US system. He asked whether the EC representative could confirm that, under their proposal, a US geographical indication would be registered for protection in the EC if it were not opposed through the multilateral system the EC was proposing. In other words: what steps should the US take, within the multilateral system, in order to obtain protection for American geographical indications for wines and spirits under the EC regulations on geographical indications for wines and spirits?
