Ambassador C. Trevor Clarke (Barbados)
B.i Meeting of 23 October 2009, p.m.
10. The representative of Canada said her delegation hoped that the Chair's four questions would provide Members with another opportunity to compare and contrast the joint proposal against the few elements of TN/C/W/52 that were applicable to the mandate of the TRIPS Special Session, which was to establish a GI register for wines and spirits. Canada was ready to intensify negotiations towards such a GI register. She recalled that, at the end of Canada's presentation at the last formal meeting of how the joint proposal could be implemented in practice, her delegation had concluded that the joint proposal provided real benefits to both consumers and producers, that it respected the mandate and that it was easy to implement. The room document circulated at this meeting, which Canada co-sponsored, further illustrated this conclusion and provided a better understanding of the utility of the joint proposal. The co-sponsors of this document represented a diverse collection of Members with different legal systems and means for the protection of GIs for wines and spirits. Canada was prepared to supplement the responses provided in the written communication with additional information pertaining to its domestic system.
