Ambassador C. Trevor Clarke (Barbados)
B.i Meeting of 23 October 2009, p.m.
17. The representative of China said that his delegation believed that the Chair's first three questions were also connected to other issues of concern to China and the majority of WTO Members. In that regard, his delegation wanted to make two general points. Firstly, the majority of developing countries did not have GIs relating to wines and spirits, but had GIs for other products. Therefore, his delegation believed that the product coverage of the future multilateral registration system was key to these negotiations, i.e. that it should cover GIs for all products. Secondly, as the proposal in TN/C/W/52 had indicated, the majority of Members believed that the issues of the multilateral register TRIPS/CBD and GI extension were closely linked and that negotiations on all the three subjects should move in parallel. His delegation hoped that this could be incorporated and given priority in future questions by the Chair.
