Ambassador C. Trevor Clarke (Barbados)
B.i Meeting of 23 October 2009, p.m.
32. The representative of Brazil said that, although the situation in the Special Session reminded him of the paradox of Achilles and the tortoise - once Achilles had moved half the distance to the tortoise, the tortoise had already moved further away from the centre, making it impossible to come together - looking at the room document and listening to the EC's answers made it clear to him that this gap could eventually be bridged. It was only that at this moment there was clearly no willingness, at least on the part of the tortoise, to allow the rest to proceed. At this point his delegation just wanted to state for the record that, while Brazil certainly had issues with prior trademarks and genericness, both of which Brazil would not be able to negotiate away, his delegation was nevertheless satisfied that the proposal in TN/C/W/52 had taken into account the kind of concerns Brazil had had.
