Minutes - TRIPS Council Special Session - View details of the intervention/statement

Ambassador C. Trevor Clarke (Barbados)
B.ii Meeting of 28 October 2009, p.m.
129. In response to the comment made by the EC, the representative of Canada clarified that the list of 1,500 names did not trigger any protection in Canada. It was a first step to see if these terms could qualify as GIs. The EC would still have to go through the procedure in Canada to have their terms protected. The sorting of the names had been done without taking any legal presumption into consideration. Had that been the case, the task of examining the names would have been much more difficult.
The Special Session took note of the statements made.
