Ambassador C. Trevor Clarke (Barbados)
B NEGOTIATION ON THE ESTABLISHMENT OF A MULTILATERAL SYSTEM OF NOTIFICATION AND REGISTRATION OF GEOGRAPHICAL INDICATIONS FOR WINES AND SPIRITS
29. The representative of Canada expressed his delegation's appreciation to the outgoing Chairman for his patience, intelligence and grace. The Chair had had the difficult task of seeking to reconcile a set of issues on which the Members were deeply divided, and to which they had very different approaches in their national intellectual property protection regimes. He said that Canada's position in these negotiations had not changed but his delegation nonetheless welcomed the report as a constructive effort to capture the status of the negotiations and to provide some suggestions on the future work to be undertaken. Canada would respect this work by seriously considering these suggestions. In particular, the five guiding principles proposed in the report could help Members to pursue their work in the future and to structure their discussions.
The Special Session took note of the statements made.
