84. The representative of the European Communities, in response to Argentina's statement, said that according to the EC proposal, if a name was registered as a GI and there was a prior trademark or a trademark used in good faith as provided in Article 24.4 or 24.5, these uses would be grounds for opposition. In spite of the registration, these exceptions could be used and could have the result that the term would not be registered, albeit at the national level. In other words, the exceptions under Articles 24.4 and 24.5 did not disappear; they only operated at the national level.
