Ambassador Vanu Gopala Menon (Singapore)
C PARAGRAPH 6 OF THE DOHA DECLARATION ON THE TRIPS AGREEMENT AND PUBLIC HEALTH
55. The representative of Australia hoped to see the paragraph 6 issue resolved as soon as possible. He believed that the 16 December text was the most useful basis on which a solution could be found and his delegation was committed to working at finding an acceptable outcome. He expressed his awareness of the importance that countries in the Pacific region placed on the public health issue as was evident in the ACP countries' paper. He supported the European Communities' comment on technical assistance to least-developed countries by establishing practices and procedures to give effect to the Declaration. He brought to the attention of the Council the Australian Government's standing offer to countries in the Asia-Pacific region to provide support to draft legislation to take advantage of the flexibilities in the TRIPS Agreement. He said that this programme was part of Australia's global HIV/AIDS initiative.
