Ambassador Vanu Gopala Menon (Singapore)
J REVIEW OF THE APPLICATION OF THE PROVISIONS OF THE SECTION ON GEOGRAPHICAL INDICATIONS UNDER ARTICLE 24.2
185. The representative of Australia said that his delegation had made clear that it saw the Article 24.2 review as a positive opportunity to build up experience and information on implementation. In that spirit, Australia had submitted a paper which set out how it had fulfilled its obligations under Section 3 of Part II of the Agreement. In doing so, Australia had addressed a very substantial number of the 253 questions posed by the European Communities and referred to a number of documents that provided more than adequate explanations and answers to those questions. The representative of the European Communities asked whether the Australian delegation intended to provide responses to each of the questions his delegation had posed to it or whether his delegation would have to assume that the documents to which Australia had referred comprised answers to these questions. The representative of Australia responded that the answers to all the questions posed by the European Communities, and to any follow-up questions it still might have, had been answered in the paper his delegation had submitted to the Council as well as in the range of legislation and website addresses referred to in this context. The representative of the European Communities said that his delegation was not satisfied with the way Australia had responded to its questions.
