M.i Letter from the Chair of the General Council concerning notifications and other information flows
119. The Chairman informed the Council that he had received a letter, dated 26 February 2009, from the Chair of the General Council, Ambassador Mateus, recalling that the informal meeting of the Trade Policy Review Body held on 9 February 2009 had initiated a process of monitoring recent trade developments associated with the current global financial and economic crisis. At that meeting, Ambassador Agah, the then Chair of the Trade Policy Review Body, had noted that if this exercise were to be carried out successfully and were to be useful to the WTO membership, the availability of comprehensive, accurate and timely information would be crucial. Furthermore, in concluding that meeting, he had stated that he would be writing to the Chair of the General Council to request that he contact the Chairs of all WTO Councils and Committees to invite them to consult with Members on ways to improve the timeliness and completeness of notifications and other information flows on trade measures falling within their respective areas of responsibility. Furthermore, the Chair of the General Council had written that, in response to this request, he would be very grateful the Chair of the TRIPS Council would arrange these consultations to take place at the earliest possible date and inform the Chair of the Trade Policy Review Body of the results. 120. He suggested that, in response to this letter, the Council request the incoming Chair of the TRIPS Council to consult on the matter.
