Ambassador Karen Tan (Singapore)
D; E; F REVIEW OF THE PROVISIONS OF ARTICLE 27.3(B); RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE TRIPS AGREEMENT AND THE CONVENTION ON BIOLOGICAL DIVERSITY; PROTECTION OF TRADITIONAL KNOWLEDGE AND FOLKLORE
70. The representative of Argentina said that her delegation did not support the artificial parallelism between the three TRIPS related issues as proposed in document TN/C/W/52. She said that while misappropriation of genetic resources and traditional knowledge was a serious problem, her delegation did not support the proposal of amendment of the TRIPS Agreement as contained in document TN/C/W/52. She said that Members should continue to have discussions on the TRIPS/CBD issue without denying the important work being carried out at WIPO. She informed the Council of the new mandate given to the relevant WIPO body at the WIPO General Assemblies in 2009, and hoped that this would yield important results in the future.
