Ambassador Dacio Castillo (Honduras)
17.5 Event on "TRIPS/CBD and Geographical Indications"
387. The representative of Australia expressed his surprise and disappointment at learning about the side event. In Australia's view, it was not in the spirit of recent discussions between ambassadors and in the General Council in support of seminars and symposiums that were balanced and inclusive as a means to building understanding and finding consensus. He questioned the balance in the event's agenda, and emphasized that it was not a WTO event but an advocacy exercise organized by a number of W/52 proponents. His delegation would treat it as such. Australia had not changed its position on the W/52 proposal, and rejected the artificial parallelism that some Members were promoting in relation to TRIPS/CBD and GIs. In Australia's view, these issues should be dealt separately on their merits, and the linking of TRIPS/CBD with GIs was likely to prevent forward progress on both issues.
