Mr. W. Armstrong (New Zealand)
G.i Review of Section on Geographical Indications
40. The Chairman recalled that Article 24.2 of the Agreement required the Council for TRIPS to undertake the first review of the application of the provisions of the Section on geographical indications within two years of the entry into force of the WTO Agreement, i.e. by the end of 1996. The questions he, therefore, raised were: when should the Council undertake this review and how should it go about it, including what documentation might be prepared. In this regard he recalled that the TRIPS Council had already agreed to undertake its review of the legislation of developed countries in the area of geographical indications at its meeting scheduled for November 1996.
