Ambassador Carmen Luz Guarda (Chile)
D.i National implementing legislation of South Africa on enforcement
30. The Chairperson recalled that, at the last meeting, the representative of South Africa had informed the Council that his delegation was not ready to have its legislation on enforcement reviewed at that time, and that the Council had agreed to undertake the review of South African enforcement legislation at the present meeting. As she had mentioned earlier (see agenda item B above), South Africa's responses to the Checklist of Issues on Enforcement had been received and circulated in document IP/N/6/ZAF/1. In accordance with the agreed procedures for the review, she offered the floor to the representative of South Africa and asked him to respond orally to the questions posed to his delegation by the United States, the European Communities, Japan and Switzerland, together with a brief introductory overview of the structure of the South African legislation on enforcement and of the changes, if any, that it had had to bring about in order to make the legislation compatible with the TRIPS Agreement.
