Ambassador Carmen Luz Guarda (Chile)
Chairperson
68. The Chairperson recapitulated the items that would be on the proposed agenda of the next Council meeting to be held on 19 September 1997. First, in regard of the issue of technical cooperation, the Council had agreed that it would focus on the issue of technical cooperation at the September meeting, as it had done at the September meeting last year. Second, the Council had agreed, at its meeting of 27 February 1997, in the context of work to be done in relation to Article 23.4, to an information-gathering activity concerning systems for the notification and registration of geographical indications. Members had been asked to submit information on any such systems which they operated by the end of July for consideration by the Council at its meeting in September. A reminder of this invitation had been circulated in WTO/AIR/637 of 4 July 1997. The Council had also agreed to revert, in September, to the preparation by the Secretariat of an outline of a factual background note on existing international notification and registration systems for geographical indications. As concluded at the present meeting, in September she would launch informal consultations on the issue of Article 24.2, including all the proposals presented by Members. The Council had also agreed, at its meeting of 27 February 1997, to revert to the issue of notifications under Article 4(d). Apart from the above mentioned topics, the following items that the Council had addressed at the present meeting would continue to be on the agenda at the next meeting: observer status for intergovernmental organizations; notifications under other provisions of the Agreement; review of legislation and its follow-up; implementation of Article 70.8 and 70.9; and information on relevant developments elsewhere in the WTO.
