The representative of Canada, replying partly to the EC questions, said that her country certainly was seeking benefits of a system that was not just for those with a labelling department such as had been described by the United States, but for all countries. Canada, at the moment, was examining some 10,000 names that had been requested for GI protection in Canada by the European Union. Canada did not have a labelling legislation like the US and had to tackle the task with the few officers from the Canadian Intellectual Property Office and with the existing resources. This fact alone caused Canada to support a voluntary database system which facilitated the use of the enhanced protection under Article 23.4.
