Ambassador Alejandro Jara (Chile)
United States of America
F.i Annual Updates on Technical Cooperation Activities
60. The representative of the United States recognized that many developing country Members continued to work to bring their intellectual property regimes into full compliance with the TRIPS Agreement. He reaffirmed his delegation's commitment to providing assistance in drafting strong intellectual property laws and building the structures needed to enforce those laws. The United States often did this in partnership with the WIPO and WTO Secretariats and its own private sector. The United States' notification (document IP/C/W/306) showed that it had participated in over 170 programmes for officials from more than 110 countries. This was substantial evidence of broad ranging and substantive technical cooperation. The United States would continue to provide this assistance as it had already done for many years. He invited Members to provide feedback and make observations about these programs and their utility. He foreshadowed an amendment to his delegation's notification which would list efforts by the United States' private sector to provide technical assistance to Members.
