The representative of Brazil said that he believed that the CBD secretariat would have a very useful role to play as an observer to the Council, since one of the most relevant agenda items was the relationship between the TRIPS Agreement and the CBD. For this reason, it would be in the interest of every Member to grant it observer status. At the Council's previous meetings, the possibility of conferring the CDB secretariat ad hoc observer status had been raised as a compromise to pull Members out of the present impasse. He requested that the Chair continue his consultations in order to find a satisfactory solution to this matter.
