6. Brief description
Amendment: Act No. 84/2007 Coll. of Laws of the Slovak Rep. Amendment: Act No. 279/2007 Coll. of Laws of the Slovak Rep. Amendment: Act No. 395/2009 Coll. of Laws of the Slovak Rep. Amendment: Act No. 125/2016 Coll. of Laws of the Slovak Rep. Amendment: Act No. 83/2021 Coll. of Laws of the Slovak Rep. Amendment: Act No. 337/2022 Coll. of Laws of the Slovak Rep. The Slovak law on designations of origin and geographical indications has been amended various times since 2003. These amendments are based in particular on the implementation of the EU law, particularly taking into account the exclusive competency of the EU in the field of agricultural geographical indications. The 2007 amendment was based on the transposition of the Directive (EC) 2004/48 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 29 April 2004 on the enforcement of intellectual property rights. The version of the Act in force in 2024 is a mixture of implementing provisions completing the EU provisions on agricultural geographical indications (protection on EU level only) and provisions dealing with the national protection of non-agricultural geographical indications. Following the adoption of Regulation (EU) 2023/2411 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 18 October 2023 on the protection of geographical indications for craft and industrial products and amending Regulations (EU) 2017/1001 and (EU) 2019/1753, which create a new EU title for the protection of craft and industrial geographical indications (non-agricultural geographical indications), a future amendment to the Act is planned. From December 2025 no national protection title for craft and industrial products is available.
