Minutes - TRIPS Council Special Session - View details of the intervention/statement

Ambassador C. Trevor Clarke (Barbados)
B.ii Meeting of 28 October 2009, p.m.
109. The Chairman said that all Members seemed to agree that they were negotiating a register capable of facilitating the protection of wine and spirit GIs but that there were some nuanced views regarding how to facilitate that protection. In his view, there was a wide range of ways of facilitating protection. For example, if one way of facilitating would be proposed but would not be agreeable to some Members because they would be unable to apply it, e.g. for legal reasons, what would happen? While emphasizing that it was clear that there was no intention to increase protection, he urged delegations to think about the various ways a Member might accept to consider how to facilitate protection in its domestic environment.
The Special Session took note of the statements made.
