Ambassador Eui-yong Chung (Korea)
C.3.b.ii Costs
91. The representative of Argentina reiterated that the more complex the system was, the higher the cost would be. She also repeated that no additional costs should be involved for the WTO, the Members or the producers. If the system was to be based on fees, it would be even more onerous for developing countries; that might be one element which could make it difficult for developing countries to participate in the system. From an economic point of view, the advantage would be greater for the developed countries which would be able to register more GIs than developing countries; the latter would have to consider the financial implications involved and would think much more about the desirability of registering GIs or participating in the system.
