Ambassador Eui-yong Chung (Korea)
United States of America
C.3.b.iii Possible role of the Secretariat
107. The representative of the United States said that, like other participants, his delegation would expect Members to take the procedure seriously and not notify terms that were obviously not geographical terms. It would foresee a very small role of the Secretariat with regard to checking such notifications. Recalling that a Member had earlier mentioned that 120 pages of terms had been notified to its authorities in the framework of negotiations for a bilateral agreement, his delegation would not expect the Secretariat to perform any type of examination function with regard to such notifications. The joint proposal made by the United States and other countries foresaw that the examinations would be undertaken solely with regard to, and under, national law.
