C.3.b.iii Possible role of the Secretariat
115. The representative of the Czech Republic said that the role of the WTO Secretariat depended on the rules established for notification, opposition and registration procedures. From her delegation's view point, there should be a body which served as a notification and registration point. It could either be the Secretariat or a body established for that purpose. The role of that body should include some basic elements. Regarding notification, it meant in practice that it should take note of the notification of GIs made by Members. It should examine all the formal requirements of the notification, publish the notified GIs and ensure that Members were informed about those GIs. Regarding registration, it meant that it should administer the register, enter GIs into the register, publish registered GIs periodically in a transparent manner, and decide on possible cancellation of registrations under clearly set conditions. During a specified time-period, it should take evidence of all challenges made by Members as well as of the results of such challenges.
