45. The representative of New Zealand said that her delegation was shocked that the European Communities was explicitly proposing to exclude collective and certification trademarks from a register when in fact these tools were being used by a number of different Members to implement their existing geographical indication obligations. This ran counter to the firm position of her delegation that nothing regarding the future multilateral system should prejudice Members implementing systems of geographical indication protection that differed from the European Communities' own system of geographical indication protection, particularly those countries such as New Zealand, with a common law system.
