105. The representative of Korea opposed the artificial parallelism between the issues of TRIPS/CBD and GI extension. Referring to the Bolivian proposal of prohibiting patenting of life forms and its ethical concern, he said that patenting of life forms had a great impact on the development of new medicines and the easing of chronic food shortage. It would also have an impact on the implementation of the Paragraph 6 system since a progress in this area would be difficult if there were no patenting of life forms.
