Ambassador Vanu Gopala Menon (Singapore)
P.ii Arrangements for the reviews of Armenia and the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia
238. The Chairman said that, as the Council had been informed at its previous meeting and earlier in the course of this meeting, Armenia and the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia had recently acceded to the WTO and were not applying any transitional period in the area of TRIPS. The Council had not yet received the required notifications of their legislation. He suggested that the Council request the Secretariat to remind these new Members of their notification obligations. Given that, after the receipt of the notifications, Members would need some time to prepare questions to be posed to these Members in the context of their review, and that these Members would need some time to prepare their responses, it would appear that the most appropriate time for the reviews of TRIPS implementing legislation of these two Members would be the Council's first meeting in 2004. If this were agreeable, he suggested that the Council come back to the arrangements for these reviews, in particular the deadlines for questions and responses, at the Council's next meeting.
