234. The representative of Brazil said that the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) should be accepted as an observer to the TRIPS Council. The relationship between the TRIPS Agreement and the CBD was a permanent item on the Council's agenda. It was also part of the Doha Round mandate and the object of a number of written communications and proposals. The fact that there were several pending requests for observer status from other international organizations should not prevent the Council from granting the observer status to the CBD Secretariat. Another possibility would be to consider a proposal that a CBD should be granted in ad hoc invitation for each session of the Council.
