33. The representative of the Secretariat said that the Symposium had been held in Eger, Hungary on 24 and 25 October 1997. It was the sixth time that WIPO had co-organized a Symposium on this topic; the previous ones had been held in Bordeaux (1988), in Santenay (1989), in Wiesbaden (1991), in Madeira (1993) and in Melbourne (1995). There had been over 100 participants from 52 countries at the Eger Symposium. The subjects that had been discussed were very much TRIPS-related and, after introductions by a speaker from WIPO on the post-TRIPS situation under WIPO Conventions relevant to geographical indications and by a speaker from the WTO Secretariat on the TRIPS Agreement and work in the WTO relevant to geographical indications, an overview had been given, by speakers from the regions concerned, of the status of the protection of geographical indications in Central and Eastern European countries, the United States, Latin America, France, Australia and New Zealand and about the functioning of the EEC Regulation on the protection of geographical indications and designations of origin for agricultural products and foodstuffs. The proceedings of the previous five Symposia that WIPO had co-organized had been published by WIPO and it was WIPO's intention to issue a similar publication on the Eger Symposium.
