89. The Chairperson recalled that, at its last meeting, the Council had considered a joint proposal from a number of delegations. Some Members had indicated at that time their intention to present further comments after studying this proposal in greater depth. The proposal in question concerned, specifically, the extension of additional protection for geographical indications to products other than wines and spirits, and it was currently sponsored by 17 delegations, namely those of Bulgaria, Cuba, the Czech Republic, Egypt, Iceland, India, Jamaica, Kenya, Liechtenstein, Mauritius, Nigeria, Pakistan, Slovenia, Sri Lanka, Switzerland, Turkey and Venezuela, as reflected in document IP/C/W/247/Rev.1. A new paper addressing the matter had been received, jointly submitted by the delegations of Argentina, Australia, Canada, Chile, Guatemala, New Zealand, Paraguay and the United States (document IP/C/W/289).
