Ambassador Eui-yong Chung (Korea)
135. The representative of Australia said that he did not think his country would notify "Tokay" as a GI. The point he wanted to make related to the issue of definition: as long as the EC's understanding was that traditional expressions could never be contemplated as GIs, his delegation would feel reassured. Nonetheless, he said that his example given earlier was still relevant for other countries. For example, if two countries in South America had the same GI and only one of them notified it, and the other forgot to raise any objection, then the first country would "have a jump" on the second. These were the sort of problems he was thinking of, particularly with a system based on the Hungarian dispute resolution system.
